THE CHRISTIAN'S SECRET OF A HAPPY LIFE

Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911) --Spokesperson for inner piety and American Quaker author of the spiritual class, The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life (1875) -- was raised in a strict Quaker home and educated at the Quaker school of Miss Mary Anna Longstroth.  In 1851 she married Robert Pearshall Smith.  Converted in 1858 under Plymouth Brethren influence, she claimed to have a deeper spiritual life experience in 1867 that propelled her and her husband on a speaking tour of the United States . In 1873-1874 she and her husband conducted a series of "Higher Christian Life" meetings in England.  They remained in England and observed the founding of the Keswick Convention in 1874, an outgrowth of their conferences.
